A man and woman appeared in the Welkom Magistrate's Court on Thursday in connection with the gruesome murder of a Welkom man whose body parts were discovered in their home.

The case against Maartens van der Merwe, 24, and Chane van Heerden, 20, was postponed to 20 May.

The matter was postponed for further investigations, said Free State police spokesman Captain Stephan Thakeng.

The young couple were arrested following the murder of 23-year-old Michael van Eck, whose body was found with limbs missing in a shallow grave at the Welkom cemetery on Sunday.

A police task team made an early breakthrough in the investigation and information was followed up which led the investigation team to a residential area in Welkom where Van der Merwe and Van Heerden were found.

Police searched the property and the missing body parts were found in a fridge, a cupboard, and buried in the garden.

Van Eck disappeared after he apparently went on a date on Saturday night and should have been at work on Sunday morning.

However, his employer later told the police that he did not arrive for work.

The employer said Van Eck was to have met his date - a girl he met on the social cell phone network 2go - at the Welkom cemetery. - Sapa
