PICS: At least four killed in #Kroonstad train crash

Bloemfontein - At least four people were killed and scores injured in a crash between a train, a truck and a light motor vehicle between Hennenman and Kroonstad, paramedics said on Thursday.

ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring confirmed four people had died in the accident.

According to ER24, provincial fire and medical services were the first to arrive on the scene, finding that several train carriages were lying on the side. A fire had broken out in one of the carriages and had begun to spread.

“ER24 paramedics, along with other services, began to evacuate the train and assess the patients while fire services began to battle the blaze," ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said. “Upon assessment, paramedics found that approximately 100 patients had sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.”

“The patients are currently being treated on scene and will be transported to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment.”

Initial reports show that no fatalities had been found on the scene.

The details surrounding the incident were not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigation.
