Johannesburg - Three men were killed and another critically injured Tuesday morning following a head-on collision between two light motor vehicles on the R26 outside of Reitz in the Free State, paramedics said in a statement.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after 08h00 to find the two vehicles on the side of the road.

"Both vehicles had sustained a large amount of damage in the collision," he said.

"Upon further inspection, paramedics found that three men had sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for them and they were declared dead."

Meiring said a fourth man was treated by paramedics.

"Assessment showed that the man had sustained numerous injuries and was in a critical condition."

Meiring said the man was provided with advanced life support interventions.

"Once treated, the man was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

"The details surrounding this incident are not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations."
