Johannesburg - Gauteng police were monitoring Bekkersdal, outside Westonaria, on Wednesday following violent service delivery protests in the area.

Constable Elsie Tshonte said a group of protesters gathered near the local taxi rank.

“They are singing and burning tyres... It's not violent,” she said.

She denied reports that a foreign shop owner shot and wounded a protester earlier.

“It's hearsay... Nothing has been reported at the police station yet.”

During the protests last week, residents threw stones and a petrol bomb at the local police station, damaging three police vehicles and a disaster management vehicle.

Thirty-five people were arrested and charged with public violence. - Sapa
