Johannesburg - A cyclist was critically injured when a car crashed into him along the R562 in Blue Hills, Midrand in Johannesburg on Sunday morning, paramedics said.

ER24 paramedics arrived on scene at about 7.30am where they found the cyclist with multiple fractures and abdominal injuries, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.

The ER24 Oneplan medical helicopter was called to the scene to airlift him to hospital.

"It is understood that the driver of a vehicle lost control and crashed into the cyclist while he was sitting on a small embankment next to the road. The vehicle also collided with a nearby lamppost."

The driver of the vehicle was assessed by paramedics but found not to have sustained any injuries. Local authorities attended the scene and would investigate, Vermaak said.
