Mondli Gungubele was sworn in as mayor of Ekurhuleni on Wednesday, taking over from Ntombi Mekgwe just months before municipal elections are expected to take place next year.

“I should acknowledge and appreciate the immense responsibility that comes with this task, particularly looking at the outstanding work that needs to be done in the remaining few months,” Gungubele said in an acceptance speech prepared for delivery at the Germiston Council Chambers.

“Priority will be given to improving service delivery and challenges that face our people,” he said.

Gungubele said Mekgwe and her team had laid a solid foundation for his term of office. The main objective for his term would be to fight fraud and corruption.

“We will undermine any kind of cronyism, factionalism and regionalism within our City.”

He said the outcome would be people seeing Ekurhuleni as the destination of choice to live and work in. -
