Johannesburg - Gauteng Disaster Management said that the West Rand and Ekuruleni were the most affected areas by Monday's thunderstorms.

"There were malls and schools that have had their roofs blown off," Elias Sithole, head of Disaster Management said on Tuesday.

Johannesburg residents posted pictures on Twitter of golf ball size hail, flooded roads as well as buildings that were ruined by the storm.

ER24 reported that two people were injured after the ceiling of Cradle Stone Mall in Krugersdorp collapsed.

Gift of the Givers said in a statement on Tuesday they were ready to respond to calls from Disaster Management to assist struggling Krugersdorp residents a day after the storm.

"We are preparing hot meals as an immediate response. Shoprite/Checkers will partner us both in the supply of hot meals, provision of food parcels and blankets."

But it was not all goodwill on display after the hail storms, which affected people who reside in low lying areas were displaced and were provided shelter at community halls.

Sithole said: "An ambulance was robbed at gun point while assisting in Alexandra".

The traumatised medics are receiving counselling.
