Johannesburg – The Gauteng Health Department on Tuesday called a meeting with the National Institute of Communicable Diseases after two new cases of typhoid fever were discovered at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital in Pretoria.

According to the department, Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu’s aim for the meeting was to check the state of readiness of all health districts and facilities.

The agenda of the meeting included discussions about the department’s response to Typhoid fever.

Provincial Health spokesperson Steve Mabona added: “We can confirm that all our health districts and facilities are ready to handle any cases.

“We will be doing community awareness blitz about the diseases (start date will be communicated in due course). We are strengthening education and, as such, our emphasis is on what to look out for in terms of symptoms.

“It should be noted, however, that we don’t have an outbreak yet and as such we need not panic.”

So far six cases of the disease have been reported by the provincial health department. One person has died in hospital.
