At least 23 people were injured and two people killed when a bridge collapsed over the M1 near Grayston in Johannesburg on Wednesday afternoon.

ER24 paramedics along with other services, including Life Healthcare were on scene and reported that the injuries ranged from minor to critical.

Johannesburg Metro Police confirmed that at least one person died in the collapse, with unconfirmed reports that a second person may have died. Rescue personnel were working frantically to free more people trapped under the debris.

JMPD spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said: “We can confirm that the pedestrian bridge on Grayston has collapsed.”

Mamonyane said emergency services were busy on the scene trying to help the injured and also to divert traffic.

Mamonyane said that she couldn’t say when the wreckage from the collapse would be cleared because there was still many people trapped under what seemed to be a slab from the bridge.

“Emergency personal is still busy trying to rescue people who are trapped,” she said.

The M1 was closed to traffic as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Local authorities were quickly on scene for investigation.
