Johannesburg - The build-up to the “mother of all battles” will begin on Friday when Cosatu members gather at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Joburg.
The planned march is a protest action against e-tolls and the housing crisis in Lenasia. It will begin at 9am.
The plan is for the marchers to leave Mary Fitzgerald Square just after 11am and make their way along Bree to Simmonds Street and hand over memorandums at the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport and the Premier’s Office.
From Simmonds the protesters will move down Sauer to Fox Street, where they will hand over a third memorandum at the Department of Housing and Local Government.
While this is happening, a similar march will be taking place in Pretoria, starting out from Schubert Park.
Friday is going to be a precursor for further protests organised for next Thursday.
Cosatu plans to have a freeway protest, the first of its kind, on that day, according to Cosatu’s Gauteng secretary, Dumisani Dakile. The highways affected will include the N1, N3, N4 and both the M1 and M2.
Cars, trucks and other vehicles will drive slowly on the highways in protest at e-tolling.
“We are still organising the logistics,” said Dakile.
This will be the precursor to even bigger protests in March, which Cosatu is referring to as the mother of all battles.
Details about this protest, said Dakile, would be revealed at a later date.
