Pretoria - Popular Afrikaans singer Kurt Darren could be out of action for the next eight weeks following a serious car accident at the weekend, says his agent.

Darren, 43, a passenger, broke eight ribs after the car he was travelling in rolled on Sunday and ended up in a ditch near Kameelfontein on the notorious Moloto Road.

He was airlifted to Milpark Hospital in Joburg after it was suspected that he had broken his back.

Darren, well known for hits like Loslappie and Meisie Meisie, was returning home at around 1.30am after watching a Super 15 rugby match at Loftus. A friend, Marnus Bisschoff, and assistant Nadia van Rensburg were travelling with him.

Social networks were flooded with well-wishes for Darren, who remains in intensive care.

Cape Town radio personality Ian Bredenkamp tweeted: “Kurt Darren won’t make @Huisgenoot skouspel in Cape Town this weekend after his car accident. Please keep him in your prayers.”

Nozipho simply tweeted: “Get well soon Kurt Darren.”

According to Louis van Wyk, Darren’s agent, he is “out of the danger zone” but remains in tremendous pain. Van Wyk said Darren would undergo X-rays to determine if there was any bleeding on his lungs.

He said although Darren was conscious, he was not speaking much and was still “a little dazed” and receiving oxygen.

“However, he did indicate with a thumbs-up that he was doing okay,” Van Wyk said.

Darren’s wife Dunay, who is abroad on a cruise ship, is trying to get back to South Africa to be by his side.

Van Wyk said she was given the trip as a birthday present by relatives, but felt it was her duty to be by her husband’s side, even though Darren had indicated that she should complete the trip.

According to Van Wyk, Bisschoff is said to be in a stable condition after sustaining several cuts and bruises.

Van Rensburg is also in a stable condition after dislocating her hip.
