Johannesburg – A Johannesburg man has been arrested for allegedly being in possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition, pointing a firearm, and domestic violence, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

The 41-year-old suspect was arrested at the International Liquor Store on the corner of Bree and Ntemi Piliso streets at 3pm on Friday, Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said in a statement.

The suspect allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and pointed a firearm at her. She contacted police and they went to his place of work. Police took the suspect to his home where they recovered a firearm and ammunition.

The firearm’s serial number showed that the licenced owner had died. A police investigation was underway to determine how the firearm of the deceased “ended up in the wrongful hands”. The suspect would appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court, Mbele said.
