Johannesburg - Gauteng police confirmed that an investigation had been launched after a man shot himself and his daughter's body was discovered in his car.

The incident reportedly unfolded this past Sunday after Douglasdale police received a tip-off about a suspicious white Polo that was parked at Kingfischer road in Douglasdale.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo explained that members of the crime prevention unit, in private clothes, responded to the complaint and upon arrival at the scene, found a 52-year-old man inside the vehicle.

"The members then asked to search his vehicle but the suspect requested that they go to the police station [instead] since the members were wearing private clothing.

"The members then followed him in his vehicle but, instead of heading to the police station, the man accelerated and continued driving straight along Witkoppen road."

Police attempted to pull him over but the man continued driving before coming to a stop at the corner of Witkoppen and Malibongwe roads.

"When he realised that he was cornered by police, he pulled out a firearm and shot himself in the upper body. He was certified dead at the scene."

Police then proceeded to search his car and upon closer inspection, found the body of a 14-year-old female wrapped up in a white duvet lying on the backseat of the suspect's vehicle.

An unlicensed firearm was also recovered.

Upon investigation, it emerged that the body discovered in the man's car was his daughter.

The man's family has since been alerted, Masondo confirmed.

An inquest as well as a case of murder have since been opened at the Douglasdale police station.

"The motive behind the incident is still not yet known but police investigations are continuing," Masondo said.
