Man who injested ‘cocaine bullets’ held at OR Tambo

Pretoria – A 46-year-old man, believed to a be a Nigerian citizen, is in police custody in Johannesburg after a scanner at the OR Tambo Airport picked up that he had swallowed cocaine bullets weighing approximately 1.1 kilograms, police said on Wednesday.

Police spokesman, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, said the man, who was travelling on a passport issued by Nigeria, was coming from Sao Paolo, Brazil, and was arrested on Tuesday while trying to board a connecting flight to Lagos.

“He told the airport police who were performing routine duties that the purpose of his visit to the South American country was to visit one of his friends. However, when he was subjected to the searching processes, including the use of the scanners, it emerged that the suspect had swallowed something, which turned out to be cocaine.”

The suspect was charged with dealing in drugs and was expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
