Parliament - The killing of Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa was a death that should never have happened, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Tuesday.

Responding to a question on crime in the National Council of Provinces, he said South Africa had been robbed of a great talent.

Meyiwa, who also captained Soweto football team Orlando Pirates, was shot dead in Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni on Sunday night.

Ramaphosa said the whole country was saddened by his untimely death.

“I also want to say that the government of South Africa... we also pass our condolences to the family of Senzo Meyiwa, and indeed to the fans of football and his club as well.

“Everybody in our country is saddened by his untimely death. This is a death that should not have happened, and we are deeply, deeply sorry, and we are robbed of a great talent that could have made our nation proud over the next few years,” he said.
