Pilot, gardener killed as light aircraft crashes into Midrand house

Johannesburg - An investigation has been launched following the death of two people after a light aircraft crashed into a house in Vorna Valley, Midrand, on Monday morning.

Netcare911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said their paramedics responded at 11.20am to reports of a serious aircraft crash on Albertyn Road.

"Reports from the scene indicate that a light aircraft came down into a residential garden. After a scene assessment the pilot and a gardener tragically died," Herbst said.

"All necessary authorities are on scene and have secured the area for a South African Civil Aircraft Aviation investigation."

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele also confirmed the crash and that an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the crash. 

"An inquest docket has been opened but the civil aviation will also carry out an investigation into the crash," he told IOL.
