Johannesburg - Six people were killed Thursday morning when their minibus taxi crashed into a centre barrier and overturned on the M1 northbound highway near the Buchleuch interchange in Johannesburg, emergency services provider ER24 reported.

ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said paramedics found the taxi lying on its left side in the middle of the highway. There were bodies on the road near the wreck. One person was trapped under the overturned taxi.

"Paramedics assessed the patients and found that five patients, including a two-year-old boy, had sustained numerous fatal injuries and showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, nothing more could be done for them and they were declared dead," said Meiring.

Several other passengers were treated and thereafter transported by various services to nearby hospitals for further treatment.

"A critically injured patient was treated on scene, but unfortunately, succumbed to their injuries after some time."

Local authorities are investigating the cause of the deadly crash.
