Johannesburg - Former Bafana Bafana defender Innocent Mdledle was arrested in the early hours of Monday for driving under the influence and assaulting two police officers.

Mdledle was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol near the N1 North and R362.

He was stopped by police, who found he was driving under the influence and tried to arrest him. He allegedly resisted and fought with the officers.

Gauteng spokesman Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng confirmed Mdledle was arrested around 2am on Monday.

The former Mpumalanga Black Aces footballer, who appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, discovered that his case wasn't on the court roll. He was then released pending further investigations.

The State prosecutor said this did not mean the docket was closed or that he was off the hook.

He said it simply meant that further investigation needed to be done, and the case can then be placed on the roll and the accused can be summoned to court at a later date.

This is not Mdledle’s first encounter with the law. In 2011, the defender was arrested by police in Sunnyside, Pretoria, on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road, facing oncoming traffic.

He formerly played for Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
