Johannesburg – Twenty children from a primary school in The Hills, Johannesburg were on Wednesday morning rushed to hospital after eating sweets they had been given by a stranger, paramedics said.
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics assessed the children and realised that they all complained of abdominal pains as well as nausea and vomiting.
“The patients were immediately treated and thereafter transported to South Rand and Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for urgent care,” he said.
Malapile Lesiba a nurse at South Rand Hospital said 10 children between the ages of eight and nine had been treated.
“The children complained of abdominal pains and we managed to treat them and discharged them afterwards,” he said.
Meiring said the children told paramedics they had eaten sweets given to them by a man they did not know. The children said they ate the sweets on Tuesday.
Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital officials could not deny or confirm if the children were treated at the hospital.
Police will conduct further investigation on the matter.
