Johannesburg - Suspended Gauteng Hawks head Major-General Shadrack Sibiya is reportedly recovering at home after he was involved in a car accident this week.

Several sources said the accident occurred when Sibiya and his legal representative, advocate Victor Nkhwashu, were travelling in Grayston Drive in Sandton at about 2am on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Joburg metro police department spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said he could not find any record of the accident. “I’ve checked, there is nothing. There was another query earlier this week,” he said.

An SAPS internal memo that was sent to several members said a BMW Sibiya was driving aquaplaned and rolled a number of times, and he sustained injuries to his ribs and abdominal area.

Sibiya was treated at Sandton Mediclinic.

Nkhwashu was also treated for whiplash and discharged.

However, when The Star contacted Nkhwashu for comment, he denied being involved in an accident.

“Attempts to reach advocate Nkhwashu on his cellphone have proved futile. The secretary of General Sibiya was contacted to provide clarity on the incident. She indicated that Mrs Sibiya had informed her of the circumstances,” the memo said.

Provincial police spokesman Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said he did not know anything about the accident.
