Johannesburg - DNA tests on the seven Wits students killed in a minibus accident have not been concluded as yet.

The students died when the taxi they were travelling in crashed into the trailer of a truck that had overturned on the N1 highway near the NYL plaza toll gate in Limpopo last weekend.

The seven were burnt beyond recognition, making the process of identification difficult for forensic pathologists.

Wits spokeswoman Shirona Patel said an official memorial service to honour the students would be held this week. She could not confirm funeral details as they were still in talks with the families of the crash victims, and was not aware of any funerals having taken place already.

“We know who the students are but need consent from their parents before we release their names. We can say that they were from four different provinces, in different faculties in the university and in different years of study,” Patel said.

On Friday afternoon, the Wits Student Representative Council held a procession to commemorate the lives lost.

Six students were injured in the accident. Patel said four were recovering well in a Joburg hospital, while another was transferred to a clinic in Limpopo. The other student had been discharged.
