Johannesburg – Three people were killed when their car crashed into the back of a truck on the N12 west near the Kliprivier Road off-ramp in Johannesburg early on Saturday morning, Gauteng paramedics said.

Shortly after 2am paramedics from ER24 arrived on the scene where they found the severely damaged car. Two men were found lying next to the car, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.

“Both sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead on the scene. The driver of the vehicle was severely trapped and the local fire department had to use hydraulic rescue tools to free him from the vehicle.

“Once freed, paramedics were able to assess the full extent of his injuries. Sadly, while paramedics were working on him his vital signs suddenly deteriorated. Despite the efforts of the paramedics they could not revive him and he was later declared dead on the scene.”

A third person, found in the back of the car, sustained only moderate injuries. He was treated on the scene and transported to a nearby hospital for further care. The cause of the crash was not yet known, Vermaak said.
