Johannesburg - Three people were killed and eight others were injured, some seriously, when a minibus tax plunged off the Hendrik Potgieter bridge and ended up on its roof in Constantia Kloof in Johannesburg in the early hours of Sunday morning, paramedics said.

ER24 arrived on the scene at 2:30am and found some people lying on the ground and others seated on the pavement, ER24 spokesperson Ineke van Huyssteen said.

"Upon further assessment, it was found that three people sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead on the scene. Eight others were found to have sustained minor to serious injuries. ER24 transported the patients to hospital for further medical care."

The circumstances surrounding the accident were not yet known, Van Huyssteen said.
