Johannesburg - Fire fighters were battling two separate fires in central Johannesburg on Sunday, city emergency services said.

Two people were treated for smoke inhalation after fires broke out on Jeppe Street and the corner of Wanderers and Bock Streets, spokesman Robert Mulaudzi.

They were later taken to hospital for further treatment.

The fire on Jeppe Street was believed to have been started by tenants burning wood on top of the building to keep warm.

Mulaudzi said the cause of the blaze on the corner of Wanderers and Bock Streets would be investigated once both the fires had been extinguished.

Metro police Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said Jeppe Street has been closed off because of the fire. Traffic was now being diverted.

He said motorists were requested to use Commissioner Street and Anderson Street as alternative routes. - Sapa
