PRETORIA - Alexis Bizos - the son of world-renowned human rights advocate George Bizos - will be privately prosecuted by civil rights group AfriForum’s private prosecution team, led by former State prosecutor Gerrie Nel.

On Tuesday, Nel announced in Pretoria that AfriForum is seeking a nolle prosequi certificate to allow the private prosecution of Alexis Bizos for allegedly physically assaulting his wife Monique van Oosterhout in March 2015.

According to AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel, the alleged assault was so grievous to the extent that Van Oosterhout, who was at the press briefing on Tuesday, sustained six broken ribs.

This is the second time in recent months that AfriForum has launched a private prosecution on the child of a prominent person.

Last year Nel announced that the civil rights group has instituted legal action to prosecute President Jacob Zuma's son, Duduzane.

The case relates to a car accident on February 1, 2014 on the M1 highway in Gauteng in which Duduzane was involved. A young female passenger, Phumzile Dube, who was travelling in a taxi, was killed in the accident.
