Pretoria - Desperate times call for desperate measures, and in a desperate attempt to get rain, religious groups are being called to pray.

Nagesh Chetty from House of Healing has called on all religious leaders in South Africa to pray for rain.

“On Wednesday night at 7pm at the Union Buildings, we will have two hours of prayer for the rain,” Chetty said.

He said all religious groups were welcome to join in the prayer night.

“At the moment, we are all sitting with the same predicament. We don’t have water,” he said.

Chetty said the hot weather was a cause for concern, not only because of the drought, but also because of other effects it might have.

“In the past two days, I have seen 10 burnt-out cars on the side of the road,” he said.

The call to pray for rain comes as most parts of the country are experiencing drought.

Chetty said he would be going around the country hosting prayer nights for rain and would next go to KwaZulu-Natal, which is in the grip of a drought, followed by Cape Town.
