Durban - The Life Westville Hospital in Durban was investigating the cause of a minor explosion at the facility where a man sustained burn wounds, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson, Leanne Nyiri, said the minor explosion, which happened on Tuesday afternoon was the result of a short circuit that occurred on an electrical distribution board while a maintenance worker was changing a circuit breaker.

“He sustained burns to his arms, face and torso, and is being treated in hospital. Three staff members who assisted him were treated for smoke inhalation,” Nyiri said in a statement.

“The hospital’s maintenance team attended to repairs which were successfully completed within a few hours. A backup supply of emergency electricity was available and there was no disruption to patient care,” said Nyiri.

Nyiri said the hospital’s management was investigating the cause of the explosion, but more details were not immediately available.
