A 71-year-old woman was assaulted by suspects during an armed robbery at her home on Charnwood Drive in Verulam on Wednesday.

Reaction Unit SA said in a statement that its officers were dispatched to the home after receiving a call about an armed robbery in progress. When they arrived at the scene, reaction officers surrounded the home, but the suspects had already made their getaway.

“It was established that four suspects in a silver VW Polo forced open the driveway gate before entering the property. The suspects then broke the front door, entered the home and assaulted the elderly female,” the statement read.

“They demanded to know where the safe and other valuables were hidden. At least one suspect is confirmed to have been armed with a firearm.”

Apparently the victim began screaming for help when her grandson, who was in the bath, called their neighbour and reported the armed robbery in progress. The neighbour then reported the incident.

The suspects ransacked two bedrooms before stealing a Samsung Smart TV and fleeing.

Police confirmed the incident. No arrests have yet been made.

The elderly woman was assessed by medics on scene. She declined hospital treatment.
