A couple and their three-year-old daughter were crushed to death when a brick wall collapsed on to the room they were staying in, in KwaMashu on Saturday morning.

Ndumiso Radebe, 31, his girlfriend Ntokozo Ngema, 21 and their three-year-old daughter Ayabonga Radebe, had been asleep when a section of the wall collapsed in L section in KwaMashu.

Ngema was eight months pregnant with the couple’s second child.

Radebe’s sister Thulisile said the incident happened around 5am.

“They were already dead when they were pulled out of the room. The wall did not show any signs that it was about to collapse, in fact a large part of it is still standing. It was just the section next to their room that broke off and collapsed,” she said.

Radebe said they believed the wall might have been weakened by a heavy storm that lashed the area last month.

KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Nomusa Dube-Ncube sent her condolences to the family.

“As the provincial government we are really saddened by what has happened here in KwaMashu and we have dispatched Disaster Management teams to support and provide assistance to the family during this difficult time,” she said.
