Durban - Police are searching for two hijackers after Chatsworth resident, Farouk Shaik, was shot and left to die at the roadside when he tried to escape.

The gunmen had accosted Shaik, 58, in Moorton Drive after abandoning another car they had hijacked earlier when its anti-hijack device activated.

Shaik had stopped behind them in traffic.

The first hijacking victim, John Naicker, of Road 747, said he had been washing the windscreen of his Toyota Corolla and had it idling. He had sent his 7-year-old son into the house to fetch something and then opened the driveway gate.

As he got into the car he felt a gun pushed into his face.

“I had one leg out of the car, so I pushed the hijacker back and blurted: ‘It’s idling, take it.’

“A second hijacker appeared, jumped into the car and reversed. The other guy took my wallet,” he said.

His

car stalled at the Road 901 traffic circle, where the men hijacked the second vehicle.

Shaik, an accountant at Toyota South Africa, had left his home in Road 748 for work.

While he was driving his Toyota Corolla towards the traffic circle near Moorton Drive with his son, Naeem, the car in front stalled and two men got out and walked towards them.

One man banged on the window while the other went to the passenger side.

The men ordered the father and son out.

It is not clear if the men pulled Naeem out or if he opened the door and fled.

It is believed Shaik drove off with the gunmen walking beside the car.

One fired a shot through the back window. The bullet went through the seat and into Shaik’s back.

He drove for about 500m before collapsing. The car stalled and the men pulled him out and took the car, leaving him lying in a pool of blood.

By 3pm, Shaik had been laid to rest at the Dayal Road Cemetery in Clairwood.

His wife, two daughters and son, Naeem, are struggling to come to terms with the incident.

Police spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, confirmed that Chatsworth police were investigating.
