Johannesburg - The Ixopo Regional Court sentenced a 32-year-old man to 18 years imprisonment for raping a 72-year-old woman, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

Captain Nqobile Gwala said Dish Zamokuhle Memela was sentenced on Monday.

“It is alleged that on 7 May 2018, at 12:30am, the victim was at her residence at KwaMakhobongwane area in Bulwer when she was awoken by the noise emanating from her house. When she got up she noticed that there was a man inside her house. The accused noticed the victim behind the door, he forcefully dragged and raped her," said Gwala. 

"He then fell asleep and the victim managed to get an axe and hacked him on the chest. The accused got up and ran away leaving his clothes and cell phone behind." 

The case docket was registered at Bulwer Police Station and was allocated to Plessislaer Family Violence, Child Protection and family Violence Unit for further investigation. The accused was eventually arrested.
