Durban - A law enforcement officer at Hibiscus Coast Municipality’s Protection Services has been found dead in his hotel room in Thailand, where he had been on holiday.

Spokesman for the municipality, Simon April, said Devlyn Abbott, 40, of Southport, had been discovered by hotel staff on Tuesday.

“According to the information we have received from Port Shepstone SAPS, his travel agent had been trying to reach him on his phone, but couldn’t get hold of him.

“He then called the hotel and staff went to check his room where they found him lying on the floor,” said April.

He said no other details had been made available to them as yet and a municipal official had been sent to Abbott’s family to find out what happened.

“The last time we saw Abbott was during the Africa Bike Week and he was okay. We were shocked by the report of his death.”

Abbott had been working at the municipality’s law enforcement offices since 2007, he said.

His brother, Calvin Abbott, posted the news of his death on his Facebook page on Tuesday.

“With great sadness to tell family and friends that our brother Devlyn Abbott passed away today,” he wrote.

Friends expressed shock at the news, sending condolences and saying that Abbott had been an amazing person.

His family could not be immediately reached for comment.
