Johannesburg - The Pietermaritzburg High Court convicted and sentenced 39-year-old Phumlani Khumalo Zondi to an effective 30 years imprisonment for two counts of murder on Monday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said Zondi was terrorising his girlfriends in Dundee and the surroundings areas earlier this year.

Mbhele said the first case was reported on March 18, when the body of 40-year-old Sizakele Phakathi was found next to the footpath along Victory street, Dundee.

"Her throat was cut off and her legs were tied up with black belt."

On September 16, the body of 28-year-old Sihle Dolly Mnguni was found at Gladstone street, in Dundee. Mnguni was found in an open field with head injuries.

"Both these cases were opened at Dundee police station. An intensive investigation was started by Dundee detective members and they followed up information about the whereabouts of the accused. Within two days after the second case, the members traced and arrested the accused at Avocca area just outside Dundee where he was hiding," Mbhele said.

"He was charged and linked to both murder cases. He appeared in courts and bail was denied. It is alleged that he killed his girlfriends because they were cheating."
