“The office staff and other members of the church are still traumatised at the moment,” he said.

A staff member who was in the building when the fire started said the power distribution board had been tripping earlier and there was an explosion, followed by the fire. Another worker who was inside the auditorium when the fire broke out escaped before the flames engulfed the whole building.

The church’s official spokesman could not be reached for comment.

Police spokeswoman Nqobile Gwala said the cause of the fire was not yet known. She said no injuries were reported.

It took fire fighters about three hours to extinguish the blaze.

Hundreds of emotional church members flocked to the entrance of the church upon hearing the news about the fire.

A metro police officer was struck by a vehicle while redirecting the traffic from the scene of the fire and was taken to hospital for medical attention.
