Durban - The South African Revenue Service has announced the launch of random on-site inspections aimed at cash and carry businesses.

Commissioner, Tom Moyane, said on Tuesday the inspections were part of the new focused approach, launched in December to combat non-compliance in several high-risk sectors.

On-site inspectors will perform compliance checks to identify registration and filing non-compliance and would flag any suspicious businesses.

Sars has threatened stringent penalties on all taxes owed, and in some cases, negligent taxpayers would face criminal prosecution, said Moyane. However, Sars is offering relief to businesses who volunteer information about any tax that they owe.

“If you are not compliant, you should take the opportunity to put your tax affairs in order.

“This can be done through the Voluntary Disclosure Programme; the consequences will be less severe than if Sars establishes the non-compliance,” said Moyane.
