A day after a 21-year-old man was gunned down in a Phoenix tavern, police on Wednesday swooped in on six suspects.

Officers from the eThekwini Cluster Task Team, Phoenix police and the Durban Flying Squad tracked the suspects to the KwaMashu Hostel and arrested them early on Wednesday morning.

Police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala said on Tuesday morning, a group of heavily armed men entered a Clayfield tavern – under the guise of being patrons – and shot and killed an employee there.

“They all fled on foot,” she said, “A case of murder was opened at Phoenix police station for investigation”.

Upon arresting the suspects, police recovered two pistols and a revolver.

All the guns had had their serial numbers filed off, Gwala said.

“They will be charged for murder and possession of unlicensed firearms,” she said, “They will appear at the Verulam Magistrates’ Court soon”.

Acting Provincial Commissioner in KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Bheki Langa said the firearms would be sent for ballistic testing.

“The swift arrest of the suspects is commended. It shows that police are always alert and dedicated to prevent criminal activities and arrest the perpetrators,” he said.
