Durban – Less than an hour after a Durban man was shot dead in his car his alleged attacker was arrested.

Police spokeswoman Captain Nqobile Gwala said on Monday the man was shot dead in his car on Sunday afternoon at about 4pm in Ferguson Road in Umbilo. The man’s girlfriend was also wounded in what is believed to have been a botched hijacking attempt.

The gunman then fled the scene, but a description of the gunman was circulated by police and an officer spotted him running in nearby Brand Road.

“He gave chase and eventually he managed to apprehend the suspect. The suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm suspected to be the same one used in killing the victim at Ferguson road,” she said.

The arrested man is expected to be charged with murder, attempted murder, attempted hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Garrith Jamieson, spokesman for Rescue Care Paramedics, said that man who was killed was believed to be in his 30s. He was shot in his upper body.

“Unfortunately there was nothing more paramedics could do and he was declared deceased on the scene,” said Jamieson.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital in a serious condition.
