Durban – KwaZulu-Natal police have confirmed a case of murder was opened after a 31-year-old woman was found dead in her Tongaat home on Sunday morning.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele, at around 7.25am a 31-year-old woman was found with multiple stab wounds to the chest and body at her residential premises in Watsonia Road in Tongaat.

"A case of murder was opened at Tongaat police station for investigation," said Mbele.

Prem Balram, from Reaction Unit SA, said his officers attended the scene just after 7.30am.

"We received reports from the property owner that he found his female tenant lying in a pool of blood."

Balram said it is alleged that the woman was embroiled in an argument with a man known to her, which resulted in the stabbing. He apparently fled shortly thereafter.

Balram said the woman sustained multiple stab wounds and was declared dead at the scene.

Police have not confirmed at this stage if they were looking for the man.
