In a lengthy confession written 48 hours after the brutal murder of her parents, Nicolette said when she plunged the knife into her mother she did not have hatred in her heart. She has maintained throughout her testimony that she did it because she loved God and Naidoo.

Both siblings pleaded not guilty to murder, but admitted killing their parents.

In his confession, Hardus said Naidoo had convinced him and his sister that he was the son of God and that their parents were “a problem”.

The court heard that Nicolette lured her mother to the kitchen to have coffee. While in the kitchen, Hardus tried to shock his mother with a Taser gun, but failed. The plan was to inject air bubbles into her veins to induce a heart attack. While Hardus held her down, Nicolette went to fetch Naidoo from the Pavilion shopping centre. When she returned, she stabbed her mother. Hardus said Naidoo told him that because he “messed up” the plan, he would have to kill his father, Johan.

In his statement Hardus said he strangled his sleeping father for about 30 minutes with an electrical cord. He said his sister and Naidoo concocted a story that two armed men had entered the house, assaulted Hardus and locked him in his room.

Hardus told the court he now realised Naidoo wanted his parents murdered for their money. Nicolette praised Naidoo for ridding her of the tokoloshe that had been “spiritually violating” her for years after a domestic worker’s witchcraft, but now believed Naidoo and the worker were conspiring together.
