Durban - Police in Durban have arrested a 28-year-old woman who was found walking the streets of the city in full SAPS uniform despite not being a member of the police.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that at around 2pm on Tuesday, members of the Durban Central Field Unit were patrolling along Victoria Street when they spotted a woman in full SAPS uniform wandering down the street.

“Members approached the ...woman and asked if she is a police officer. She failed to answer and failed to produce an appointment certificate. She further mentioned that she was a volunteer and the uniform she is using belongs to her father who was a police officer.

“The suspect was then taken to Durban Central police station where she was formally charged,” Zwane said. “The suspect will appear in Durban Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of impersonating a police officer.”

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said: “Law enforcement impersonators are creating an untrustworthy relationship between police and the public therefore they shall be dealt with by the full might of the law. We will investigate and see if she was not involved in any crimes in the province.”
