Four people were arrested for public violence following a dispute between residents of Mohlohlo village outside Mokopane and mining company Angloplat, police said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Superintendent Malesela Ledwaba said the six were among a group of residents who pelted police with stones after the mining company tried to remove some of the residents to make way for a mining development.

Another reason given for the protest was that the mine had reneged on an initial agreement between the two parties, the province's whip in the National Council of provinces (NCOP), Helen Matlanyane, said.

"The mine tried to move residents to a farm outside their village, but residents prefer to be moved to a different area."

She said residents were also aggrieved by a "lack of proper consultation" on the part of the mining company.

"The community are complaining about the consultation process which they deem flawed."

To intervene in the matter, Matlanyane says she will be visiting the community on Thursday.

"We will be meeting with all the relevant stakeholders comprising of the members of the community, the mine managers, and the section 21 committee representing the interests of the community in order to address the concerns raised by residents."

Meanwhile, Matlanyane says her office has requested Angloplat to suspend the relocation of the community until an "amicable solution between all parties is reached".

Following Thursday's meeting, Matlenyane says they will also be meeting with Mineral and Energy Minister Buyelwa Sonjica to discuss the issue. - Sapa
