Johannesburg - A Limpopo businessman appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court in Limpopo on Monday for allegedly killing his mother.

Rameez Patel made a brief appearance before the case was postponed until October 11 for a bail application.

Limpopo police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said Patel was already on trial for allegedly murdering his 28-year-old wife, Fatima, at their home in Polokwane in 2015.

He was arrested on Saturday after police linked him to the murder of Mahejeen Banu Patel, 51, at her home in Polokwane.

Police said Patel's mother was with her domestic worker at her home in Nirvana, near Polokwane, when an armed man opened fire on them two weeks ago.

Patel died a few hours later in hospital. The domestic worker did not sustain any injuries.

Ngoepe said the motive behind the killing was not yet known and nothing was taken from the house.

Thirty-year-old Patel has denied killing his wife in 2015. He has blamed an intruder for the murder.
