Polokwane - The brother of murder accused Limpopo businessman Rameez Patel, Razeen Patel, was shot a day before he was expected to testify in his brother's trial.

Patel is currently standing trial in the Limpopo High Court in Polokwane for the murder of his 28-year-old wife, Fatima, the mother of his three children.

Razeen Patel, who is said to be the key witness in the trial, was shot on Sunday morning along the R71 near Makgeng village.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, speaking to IOL, confirmed the shooting incident.

"The victim was shot and injured by unknown suspects... along the R71 road between Mankweng and Polokwane near the Makgeng Village.

"He is now safe but the suspects are still on the run."

Ngoepe confirmed that a case of attempted murder has been opened.

The attempt on Razeen's life comes days after he was believed to have disappeared after he failed to appear in court to testify in his brother's trial.

According to News24, authorities went to Razeen's home and found his bakkie, a key to his house as well as his cellphone. Police also spotted a blood stain on the ground.

The news site later reported that Razeen was found "well in his home" and was expected to testify.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said it would comment after the matter has been heard, which is expected to result in a postponement.
