A brother and sister, who have allegedly been living together as husband and wife for the past 20 years and have two children, on Wednesday appeared in the Pietersburg magistrate's court on an incest charge.

A police spokesperson, Captain Ronel Otto, said on Thursday that the names of the couple would not be released, in order to protect their children who have been placed in a place of safety temporarily.

The two were arrested on Wednesday after their younger brother notified the police about the relationship. They appeared in court the same day and pleaded guilty to an incest charge, said Otto.

They were granted bail and will appear again on November 15.

The brother is in his early 40s and the sister in her late 30s.

They have apparently been involved since 1980 and are parents of two daughters, aged four and 14.

They reside in Pietersburg.

In August this year a Mpumalanga brother and sister made headline news when they were arrested for allegedly committing incest and concealing the birth of up to nine children during a 16-year relationship.

Heibrecht Kamffer, 32, and her brother, Robert Jan Fedder, 40, allegedly had two children together - aged 14 and seven - and it is believed that Kamffer had been pregnant at least seven times.

Kamffer last month married Stefan Kamffer, 23, said to have been a childhood sweetheart.

Apart from two charges of incest, the couple also face charges of child abuse.

Their parents face charges of aiding and abetting incest and fraud, having allegedly registered the children from the incestuous relationship as their own. - Sapa
