Sunday Times political editor Mondli Makhanya has been appointed editor of the Mail & Guardian, the newspaper's chairperson Trevor Ncube announced on Thursday.

He said Makhanya, 32, would take up his new post on October 1.

He would succeed Howard Barrell who resigned last month citing family reasons.

Makhanya started his career as a journalist at the M&G in 1990, spent four years at the Star newspaper, worked for Sunday World as associate editor and was also deputy managing editor of the Sunday Times.

He joined the Sunday Times in 2000.

Ncube said: "Makhanya's track record speaks volumes. He is young, energetic and fiercely independent." - Sapa
