Johannesburg - A 24-year-old man accused of killing his girlfriend was denied bail in the Mkobola Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, Mpumalanga police said.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Mtsholi Bhembe, Elvis Abram Ntuli is suspected of strangling 23-year-old Nokuthula Mahlangu at the home she shared with her siblings, aged ten and seven.

"According to information at police disposal, the suspect had visited the victim when in the wee hours of Monday, 11 September 2017, he allegedly strangled her until she died. He is alleged to have then called his sister reporting what he had just done," Bhembe said.

"He left the scene and allegedly tried to commit suicide by throwing himself in front of a moving truck, but did not die even though the truck hit him. The suspect only sustained minor injuries to the head and was taken to hospital for medical treatment, where he was later released and taken to police custody."

Bhembe said that Ntuli was remanded in custody and the matter postponed to October 2, for further investigation.
