6 in dock for selling blasting certificates

Rustenburg - Six men, arrested for allegedly selling mine blasting certificates, briefly appeared in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, North West police said.

Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Pelonomi Makau said the case against Walter Okoye, 30, Sunday Eke, 37, both from Nigeria, Rapelang Morewane, 21, Daniel Letlaka, 28, both from Lesotho, Motheo Ntsimane, 33, of South Africa and Mahau Matheantoa, 27, from Lesotho was postponed to November 25.

The six face charges of fraud and possession suspected stolen properties.

They were arrested on Tuesday, in the Rustenburg Central Business District after two of them unknowingly approached and offered to sell mine blasting certificates to police officials who were in civilian clothes.

“The police struck a deal with the suspects and waited outside while the suspects processed documents at their office. It is alleged that the police pounced few minutes later on the suspects while busy processing the documents. It was discovered during the arrest that blasting certificate as well as a vehicle licence disc had already been processed and ready to be printed,” Makau said.

The police confiscated fraudulent documents including matric (Grade 12) certificates, vehicle licence discs, birth certificates, software and computers used to manufacture various documents. Other items such as plasma televisions, laptops, cell phones and an undisclosed amount of cash were also seized.
