Potchefstroom - A 19-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping his 11-year-old niece, North West police said in a statement on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said the incident allegedly happened on Saturday.

The child had been at a friend of her mother’s house and was about to sleep when her uncle arrived.

“They opened the door for him and he requested that the minor should accompany him to get something at his place where she was allegedly raped,” Mokgwabone said.

The uncle appeared in the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

He was remanded in custody and will make a formal bail application on February 23.

In a separate incident, an accused handed himself over to police on Monday for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl.

The 37-year-old suspect appeared in the Vryburg Magistrate’s Court where the case against him was postponed until February 22.

Mokgwabone said in that case the incident allegedly happened on February 6 in Huhudi, Vryburg.

“According to information, the accused was on a suspended sentence for a public violence case and also on bail in a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Regarding the rape allegation, the accused allegedly started raping the minor in November 2015. He is also facing a charge of abduction.”

Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane condemned the incidents and said that the police would work hard to ensure that perpetrators of these heinous acts were put behind bars.
