Durban - The National Prosecuting Authority is set to hold a press conference on Tuesday to discuss high-profile cases.

NPA spokesman Luvuyo Mfaku said that while he could not divulge what would be said, the NPA would speak about cases “that have attracted the media’s attention”.

Asked if the case against the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Nomgcobo Jiba would be amongst those, he confirmed it would be.

Jiba is set to go on trial on Wednesday for alleged fraud and perjury.

The charges against Jiba relate to her decision to prosecute Johan Booysen, the head of the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal, on racketeering charges.

In February last year, Durban High Court Judge Trevor Gorven threw out the charges against Booysen, who was suspended at the time. He described Jiba’s decision to charge Booysen as “arbitrary, [and] offend the principle of legality and, therefore, the rule of law and were unconstitutional”.

Gorven, in his judgement, agreed with Booysen’s assertion that Jiba lied about having certain statements before her when she decided to prosecute, and could therefore not have used them to make her decision.

Booysen had been accused of running a criminal enterprise consisting of members of the former Cato Manor Organised Crime Unit that he headed up.

Earlier this month, the City Press newspaper reported that the newly appointed NPA boss Shaun Abrahams was planning to drop charges against Jiba.

The Democratic Alliance then threatened to haul Abrahams before parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services.

Last week Mfaku said: “We will address the media on some of the cases that attracted media attention and the public’s attention. We will do that soon. We might as well wait for that briefing.”

The press briefing is set to take place in Pretoria before midday.
