They are three of the Peninsula's most beautiful seaside spots - and islands of safety in the city's sea of crime.

Simon's Town, Melkbosstrand and Gordon's Bay have the lowest crime figures of all the suburbs of the City of Cape Town.

They are located at the furthest points from the city centre, to the north, south and east.

And while violent crime is rampant in many areas, they are still characterised by quiet, tranquil living - and beautiful beaches.

The Cape Argus compared the reported statistics from the City of Cape Town's 57 precincts in eight categories of crime that affect citizens' daily lives.

These are murder, attempted murder, rape, hijacking of cars, housebreaking, drug-related crime, robbery with aggravating circumstances and theft from vehicles.

The latest statistics list the number of crimes reported, not the number of crimes reported as a percentage of the population in an area.

So the reputations of some large areas with large populations may suffer a disadvantage.

Also, there are no police stations in suburbs such as Bishopscourt, Clifton, Llandudno, Kommetjie or Scarborough, so no statistics are available specifically for these areas.

But it can be said that among the city's 26 police stations in the East Metropole region, and its 31 in the West Metropole region, the three seaside suburbs' policing precincts reported the smallest number of crimes in 2005/2006.

- No murders were reported in Melkbosstrand - or in Bothasig, Rondebosch and Camps Bay - no attempted murders, no hijackings, five rapes, and the lowest number of residential burglaries, 58.

In contrast, Mitchell's Plain suffered the highest rate of break-ins - a reported 2 082 burglaries .

- Simon's Town had two murders, three attempted murders, eight rapes, 116 burglaries and no hijackings. Car break-ins were the lowest in the city at 140. There were four robberies with aggravating circumstances. It has the lowest drug-related crime, just 17, compared with worst-hit Mitchell's Plain, with 3 064 such incidents reported.

- Gordon's Bay had one murder and no hijackings, and was ranked third behind Melkbosstrand and Simon's town for low incidence in most other crime categories.

The lowest crime reported among inland policing precincts was in Bothasig, followed by Pinelands, with one car break-in and one burglary a day reported on average.

Some areas suffered high rates of particular types of crime. Sea Point, for example, reported relatively low violent crime, but a huge number of car break-ins (1 010). Car break-ins were also rife in other built-up business districts, such the city centre, Bellville and Claremont.

In law-abiding Melkbosstrand, local guest-house owner and estate agent Frans Ellis said this morning: "Yes, this is the residential area with the least crime. It's the best. It's still a rural atmosphere, it's safe to walk on the streets in the evenings … The police are wonderful - perfect."

Barbara Louw, head of the Gordon's Bay Village Action Campaign, said: "Gordon's Bay has a different type of crime - it's mobile crime. It's loud music, drunken behaviour, polluting the beaches ... They are alcohol- and drug-related problems."

But since the latest crime figures were gathered, a nine-strong gang has murdered Joy van Aarde, 79, and raped her pregnant neighbour.

The head of Simon's Town's Community Policing Forum, Arne Soderlund, a retired navy admiral, said: "Our biggest problem is anti-social behaviour. We have the odd bag-snatching.

"We're busy installing closed-circuit television cameras throughout the town. We're very concerned about not being complacent or being seen as a soft target."
